In 2009, Indonesian batik is designated by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

Who We Are

We are a small Hong Kong-based group of Batik lovers in close relationships with artists and galleries from Yogyakarta, the art and soul of Indonesia on the island of Java. We are passionate in preserving this centuries-old painting technique. We hope to introduce this traditional art to a wider and younger audiences.

Why Batik

Batik is a technique that makes patterns with a special tool called ‘canting’ on fabrics such as cotton or silk, using a wax-resist dyeing technique, which is an ancient art form existed in Asian, Middle East and African cultures for centuries. Modern artists use this traditional methods to create paintings and sarong for fashion to home furnishing.

Traditional Batik paintings reflect Javanese lives and animals. Therefore, modern batik paintings has a much wider subjects, with many artists pursuing their own unique or abstract styles. The tedious process of repeated waxing and dyeing for creating a batik piece is extremely labor-intensive and time-consuming.
